1830's Martin Guitar

This guitar was built by C.F. Martin circa the 1830's in New York. When Mr. Martin moved to the United States he settled in New York to start his shop building guitars. He moved to Pennsylvania about 1838 where the current Martin factory resides. The headstock on this instrument is what is known as a Stauffer style headstock, named for Johann Stauffer who C.F. Martin apprenticed with in Vienna. The back and sides of this guitar are of Brazilian Rosewood, the top is spruce. All binding and the saddle on the bridge are ivory. One of the most interesting parts of this guitar are the enclosed tuning machines. When viewing the back of the headstock there is an engraved cover that encloses the tuning machines.
